Mia Mercurio #7
What does being a powerful woman mean to you?
Being powerful means not being afraid to take up space—in a room, on the stage, or wherever you are.
What is something you have done, overcome, created, or accomplished that makes you proud?
I am proud of all the work I have done for youth theatre programs. I love inspiring all young performers to find their own voice.
Who is a woman who has influenced, inspired, or empowered you—and why?
My little sister inspires me every day. She just graduated with a law degree, and I am so proud of her!
What is something you know about yourself now that you didn't know when you were younger?
Something I know about myself now is that self-care is important. I have spent the last several years teaching, and it’s easy to feel like you have to do everything all at once. It’s important to try the best you can, but to also take time for yourself.
What do you bring to your family, your work, your community, or the world that you believe matters?
I believe I bring a positive, fun energy to the work I do. While I can be serious when the situation calls for it, I enjoy finding the fun in everyday life.
What is one thing you will never apologize for being?
I will never apologize for being loud. I talk loudly, and too often women are told to quiet their voices. I refuse to listen to that narrative. Being loud means people notice you, but that is not a bad thing!
And finally: What makes you roar?
I’m not sure how to answer this one! If it’s something that makes me feel empowered, it would be when women create art or theatre together. Being in a play with a cast like The Wolves has made me realize what being in a kind, accepting space looks like. This show is one I will remember forever, and one audiences don’t want to miss!!
